Hanging Rock Recreation Reserve and Macedon Regional Park

Hanging Rock is one of the most famous places in Central Victoria. It has been a favourite scene for gatherings since the early days of European settlement. Mystery and intrigue has been a real attraction for visitors since Joan Lindsay's novel Picnic at Hanging Rock was made into a film in 1975.

The rock can be as mysterious or magical as you want. You can take a stroll or a challenging climb. You can scale pinnacles, squeeze through crevices, explore, scramble up and down slopes and rock faces, revel in views, observe koalas, wallabies and nearly forty species of birds.

A reserve since 1886, an abundance of wildlife and native fauna can be seen. Climb Hanging Rock to be rewarded with magnificent views and the chance to immerse yourself in the history and mystery of the Rock.

Open:
Daily from 8:00 am - 6:00 pm except Christmas Day

How to get there:
Take the Mount Macedon Road from the Calder Highway exits at either New Gisborne or Woodend and follow the signs to Macedon Regional Park (Melways Ref: 509 G10).

Mount Macedon

Many of Melbourne's wealthiest families built their summer retreats in the Mount Macedon region. Sadly, many of the homes were burnt down during the fierce bush fires of 1983, known as Ash Wednesday. However, some were saved and others have been rebuilt. There are also many examples of fine modern architecture in the area. Luckily, the gardens have all bounced back, with many of the gardens the best in the state. Some are open to the public all year round while others are open just one or two days a year as part of Victoria's Open Garden Scheme.

There are also several Devonshire tearooms in the region, including in the town of Macedon. Many restaurants can also be found and there is a large pub that has croquet lawns in the back beer garden.

The Region

The Macedon Ranges wine region consists of a large area of elevated plains and mountain ranges contiguous with the dominant land form of Mount Macedon. The region comprises part of the Great Dividing Range and Central Victorian Highlands. The Great Dividing Range forms a natural watershed dividing the region into two distinct but related areas.

The similarities that exist between these two areas are:
  • Both areas are "Cool Climate" with temperature summations during the growing season varying from 1150 to 1300 degree days, i.e. Region 1 on the Amerine-Winkler climatic classification index
  • They have a common development history having largely been settled by "Overlanders" between 1837 and 1840
  • There is a common pastoral and grain-growing heritage;
  • They are based on volcanic soils; and
  • Each area has an extensive history of hospitality as a result of being gateways into the rich Northern Goldfields of Bendigo, Dunolly, Ballarat, and Castlemaine.
While these are climatic, geological, and historical links between the areas North and South of the Divide there are also significant differences:
  • The Southern parts around Lancefield, Gisborne, and Romsey produce table wines from early ripening varieties such as Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They are known for producing high quality base wine for producing sparkling wines.
  • The Northern area comprising Kyneton, Metcalfe, Taradale, Malmsbury, Springhill, Glenlyon, Daylesford and Yandoit, represents a near perfect "cool climate" in which to produce the highest quality table wines being in the range 1200 to 1300 degree days. Physiological as well as sugar ripeness is reached in Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Shiraz.
